Rewarding Safe Workers and Emploers
The Ontario government is returning over $2.5 billion to workers and businesses to help boost economic growth and improve workplace safety. This is being achieved through several initiatives:
- WSIB Rebates: Starting in February 2025, safe employers will receive $2 billion in one-time rebates. These rebates are intended to help businesses reinvest in jobs, safety programs, and wages.
- Lower WSIB Premiums: Premium rates for businesses will drop to $1.25 per $100 of payroll, the lowest in 50 years. This change will save businesses around $150 million annually.
- Investing in Health and Safety: $400 million will be allocated to improve mental health services, injury prevention programs, and workplace safety initiatives, ensuring better support for workers.
- Supporting Skilled Trades: Apprentices taking their first Certificate of Qualification exam will no longer pay the $150 fee, saving $3.6 million collectively and encouraging more people to pursue careers in skilled trades.
- Bonuses for Safe Employers: Employers who enhance workplace safety through WSIB’s Health and Safety Excellence program will receive an additional $1,000 bonus starting in 2025.
