Expanding Access to Cancer Treatment Through Increased Medical Isotope Production

September 15, 2025

Did you know that more than 247,000 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer each year?

Our government is taking action to help fight back against this deadly disease.

I was pleased to join my colleagues, MPP Nolan Quinn, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones, and Minister of Education Stephen Lecce in announcing Ontario’s support for increased 24/7 production of life-saving medical isotopes at McMaster University’s nuclear facility in Hamilton.

This expansion will ensure enough isotopes are produced to provide up to 84,000 cancer treatments every year. Medical isotopes are a critical tool in both diagnosing and treating cancer, and this investment will help patients across Ontario and Canada receive faster access to the care they need, where and when they need it..

By supporting world-class innovation here at home, our government is not only helping save lives but also strengthening Ontario’s leadership in health care research and medical technology.
