Message From your MPP

Dear Neighbour,

As we step into May, there’s a fresh energy in the air. Our postsecondary students have wrapped up another academic year, and younger students are heading into their final stretch before summer. It’s a season full of milestones, growth, and well-earned celebrations. To all the students out there, congratulations! Your dedication and perseverance are truly inspiring.

Our government is committed to ensuring a stronger foundation and brighter future, that’s why we’re investing $750 million to expand STEM programs across colleges and universities, creating 20,500 additional STEM seats each year. We’re also supporting 162 research projects through the Ontario Research Fund and Early Researcher Awards, with over $75 million in funding. These investments will drive innovation, support our economy, and help students turn their ideas into reality preparing them to meet the challenges of the present and future workforce.

As we embrace the month ahead, it’s a wonderful time to celebrate the meaningful moments that bring us closer together. We were honoured to start off the season with a heartfelt Mother’s Day Celebration here in Mississauga–Malton. It was truly special to see mothers, daughters from across generations come together to recognize the love and strength of the incredible women in our lives. We also had the pleasure of hosting our Community Reception, where neighbours gathered for an evening of conversation, connection, and shared purpose. Thank you to everyone for joining us, your presence has made the events memorable and inspiring.

As we welcome May, I look forward to continuing to serve you and seeing many of you at events across Mississauga–Malton this summer.

Best wishes,

Deepak Anand

Vision Health Month

Ontario’s Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) provides free eye exams for individuals under 19, ensuring that young people have access to necessary eye care without cost. This coverage is crucial, as over 1.5 million Canadians and more than 680,000 Ontarians experience varying degrees of vision loss, many of which can be prevented with early detection.

May marks #VisionHealthMonth, a reminder to prioritize eye care for children and teens. Regular eye exams help catch vision issues early, which is essential for learning and daily activities. With OHIP covering eye exams for those under 19, there’s no financial barrier to taking care of your family’s eye health.

Don’t wait — schedule an eye exam today to ensure a brighter, clearer future for your loved ones.

Updates from Queen’s Park

Breaking Down Inter-Provincial Trade Barriers

Canada is the second-largest country in the world — rich in resources, talent, and innovation from coast to coast. But too often, businesses and workers face unnecessary internal trade barriers that limit opportunity and slow economic growth.

That’s why our government is taking action with the Protect Ontario Through Free Trade Within Canada Act. This legislation, if passed, will be designed to reduce interprovincial trade barriers, making it easier for businesses to expand, hire, and sell goods and services across provincial lines.

By promoting free trade within Canada, we’re helping Ontario companies grow, supporting good jobs, and ensuring consumers benefit from greater choice and lower costs. It’s a common-sense move that strengthens national unity and unleashes the full potential of our country’s economy.

Protecting Ontario by Unleashing our Economy

Ontario is home to billions of dollars in critical minerals like lithium, nickel, and cobalt — essential for building electric vehicles, batteries, and clean technology.

To harness this potential, our government is cutting red tape and streamlining permits to get shovels in the ground faster.

These efforts will attract investment, create good jobs, and help build a made-in-Ontario EV supply chain — all while maintaining strong environmental protections.

Through Ontario’s Critical Minerals Strategy, we’re positioning our province as a global leader in innovation, sustainability, and economic growth.

Connecting Ontarians to Primary Healthcare

The Ontario government is dedicated to ensuring that all Ontarians have access to the health care they need, when and where they need it. As part of this commitment, we are now accepting proposals to create or expand up to 80 primary care teams across the province.

By expanding primary care services, we aim to improve access to essential health care for communities across Ontario, ensuring more people can receive the care they need closer to home.

This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen Ontario’s health care system and ensure that it meets the needs of every resident.

Expanding Strong Mayor Powers Across Ontario

Ontario is experiencing rapid growth, and with this comes the need for more homes, transit, and infrastructure to support our communities. To address these challenges, our government has proposed granting stronger powers to 169 municipalities across the province.

This change will give local mayors more authority to make decisions on development projects, helping to speed up the process and reduce delays. By streamlining development and planning, we aim to build the necessary infrastructure to meet the needs of our growing population.

The proposed changes are part of our broader efforts to ensure that Ontario’s municipalities can manage growth effectively and build the province’s future more efficiently.
