Ontario Bans Municipal Speed Cameras to Protect Taxpayers
September 26, 2025
Our government is putting people first by banning the use of municipal speed cameras across Ontario. Too often, these cameras were used as a source of revenue rather than a tool to improve safety.
Instead, we are investing in real traffic calming measures—such as speed bumps, roundabouts, raised crosswalks, curb extensions, and improved signage. These changes will help slow drivers down before enforcement is needed, keeping safety—not ticket revenue—at the centre of our approach.
For school zones where speed cameras already exist, new large advance signs will be required by November 2025, with permanent signage in place by September 2026.
This is a balanced, common-sense plan to protect taxpayers while keeping our roads safe for families, children, and communities across Ontario.
