Dear Neighbours,

As the summer sun shines upon us, I hope this message finds you all in good health and high spirits. July brings a sense of adventure and joy for both children and parents alike. Kids can explore the outdoors, create lasting memories, and engage in various recreational activities, while parents can witness their children’s growth firsthand, fostering a deeper connection, and nurture their development.

As we say goodbye to June, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the graduates of Mississauga‐Malton. Whether you have completed high school, college, or university, this is such a momentous milestone that deserves to be celebrated.

Our government remains committed to strengthening our economy and creating jobs. I am thrilled to share that apprenticeship registrations in Ontario have seen a historic increase of 24 percent over the past year, reflecting a growing interest in the skilled trades. This surge, from 21,971 to 27,319 registrations, showcases the appeal of rewarding and well‐paying careers in the trades.

Furthermore, the expansion of skilled trades career fairs for students to more cities across the province highlights our commitment to reducing stigma and promoting these life‐changing opportunities. With over $1 billion invested in the sector and the establishment of Skilled Trades Ontario, we are dedicated to building a strong workforce to meet the demands of our ambitious infrastructure plans. Together, let’s embrace the exciting prospects the skilled trades offer and continue shaping a prosperous future for Ontario.

Thank you everyone for joining me on June 11th for the Father’s Day celebration at the Malton Community Center. It was a remarkable event that allowed us to honour the incredible contributions of fathers and father figures within our families and communities. I am looking forward to seeing you all throughout the summer.

Investments In Ontario

$730 million is being invested in expanding the Lakeshore East GO line further into Durham Region.

The contract has been awarded to expand the two-way all-day train service to Bowmanville, adding 20km of tracks to help facilitate the expansion of the Greater Toronto Area, reducing gridlock and driving economic growth.

$102 Million investment has been secured from Mitsui High-Tec Inc. with $3.1 Million in support from Invest Ontario.

Mitsui High-Tec Inc. is a lead manufacturer of electric vehicle motor cores, which are the basic structure for electric vehicles. This investment will go a long way in completing Ontario’s Electric Vehicle Supply Chain while creating over 100 high-paying jobs.

$77 Million is being made available to help Ontario companies adopt, develop and bring critical technologies to market.

Through the Sector Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the Ontario Centre of Innovation, our government is helping small to medium sized businesses embrace and create technologies such as 5G, ethical artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, cybersecurity, and robotics.

$71 Million in joint Federal & Provincial funding is being invested to bring high-speed internet to underserved communities.

This expansion of internet services will benefit more than 22,000 homes in 74 Ontario communities.

$39.9 Million investment has been secured by Numesh Canada supported by $2.9 Million in provincial funding.

This funding comes from the Regional Development Program’s Southwestern Ontario Development Fund and will help Canada’s largest manufacturer of welded steel and wire mesh create a new facility with more than 50 high paying jobs.

$26 Million is being invested in a province-wide strategy to identify and plug abandoned oil & gas wells.

This funding will double the existing Abandoned Works Program while directly supporting municipalities in their efforts to expand emergency preparedness.

$14 Million in additional funds is being invested in the Greenlands Conservation Partnership.

Through partner organizations such as the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Ontario Land Trust Alliance, this investment will help restore and manage new protected wetlands, grasslands, and forest areas, while also opening additional natural spaces for Ontarians to enjoy.

$10 Million in joint Federal & Provincial funding is being made available to help beekeepers & grape growers.

The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership will provide up to $5 million for eligible grape growers and up to $5 million for eligible commercial beekeepers to help offset losses due to recent weather conditions.

$4.5 Million manufacturing investment by Veritas Tools has been secured with $675,000 by the Regional Development Program (RDP).

RDP supports eligible small to medium-sized businesses investing in new equipment/training to expand operations, as well as municipalities and economic development organizations investing in economic development projects.

Remarkable Citizen Awards

On June 30^th the community came together to honor 15 exceptional citizens of Mississauga-Malton at the fifth annual Remarkable Citizen Awards. Together we celebrated the remarkable individuals who have made a lasting impact in the local community, through their selfless acts of volunteering, community impact, and outstanding contributions.

The 2023 Remarkable Citizens Awards brought together community members from all walks of life to recognize and appreciate the exemplary achievements of these extraordinary individuals. I was joined by special guest Minister of Children, Community, and Social Services Michael Parsa in recognizing the dedication and passion exhibited by these outstanding citizens.

The event was filled with speeches, activities, and heartfelt moments as the community came together to honor these remarkable citizens. Attendees were inspired by the stories of perseverance, compassion, and resilience shared by the award recipients, serving as a reminder of the profound impact one person can have on a community.

The Remarkable Citizens Awards served as an inspiring platform to celebrate the extraordinary individuals who have shaped the local community through their invaluable contributions. The event was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended and served as a testament to the power of unity, compassion, and dedication.

Father’s Day Celebration

“There is nothing more important than the country’s wellbeing, and a family through the love and kindness of parents prepare citizens of the future”.

This was the theme of last month’s Father’s Day Celebration at Malton Community Centre, aimed to honour the special bond between fathers and their children through a range of engaging activities and delightful treats.

The event was a resounding success, with families from all walks of life joining in the festivities. One resident, shared her experience of the event, stating, “Attending the Father’s Day event was truly heartwarming. Seeing my children and other kids engaging in the activities and showing their appreciation for their fathers was incredibly touching. Facts shared by the MPP were insightful and his words reminded me how much true family bonds really matters.”

The highlight of the event was a captivating game where children were quizzed about their dads’ favorite pastimes and personalities. It provided an opportunity for the young ones to showcase their knowledge of their fathers and brought laughter and joy to all participants, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

As the event drew to a close, everyone gathered to relish a scrumptious feast, enjoying a delectable array of food that satisfied both the taste buds and the heart. The shared meal provided an opportunity for families to connect, engage in meaningful conversations, and strengthen the bonds that make Father’s Day so special.

I am so thankful to everyone who came out, for your enthusiastic participation in the event. Father’s Day is a time to celebrate the immeasurable contributions fathers make to our lives. It was a pleasure to witness families come together, celebrate their fathers, and create cherished memories. I am grateful to all the residents who joined us and made this event a resounding success.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the next great Mississauga-Malton celebration.

Updates From Queen’s Park

Get Charged for an Electric Vehicle Road Trip This Summer!

Electric vehicle owners can now explore Ontario with confidence knowing they can stop at 20 newly renovated ONroute locations across the province!

All stations are now equipped with at least 2 universal fast-charging stations on a pay-per-use system.

Charging costs 40 cents per minute and can produce approximately 150km worth of range, for as little as $7 in less than 20 minutes!

Keeping Ontarians Safe at High Risk Worksites and Businesses

Our government is committed to saving lives from the current opioid epidemic, which killed more than 2,500 people in Ontario in 2022.

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development is making it mandatory for at-risk workplaces to have life-saving Naloxone Kits on site and workers trained on how to use them.

Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose, restore breathing within two to five minutes, and allow time for medical help to arrive.

Businesses like construction sites, nightclubs, and more can now receive free kits & training to increase awareness and help reduce the stigma that prevents people from seeking help.

More than 1,000 of these kits have been distributed to businesses around the province, however, businesses may also obtain their own kits.

Saving Lives While Creating Summer Employment Opportunities for Youth

The Ministry of Health has lowered the minimum age requirement for lifeguards from 15 to 16 years old.

This move comes as a way of addressing labor shortages to ensure municipalities across the province can keep their pools open and safe this summer.

Lifeguards must pass a series of tests and training courses to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared to keep Ontarians safe.

The National Lifeguard training and certification, delivered by the Lifesaving Society, is the professional standard for lifeguarding in Canada. It certifies lifeguards across the country and is recognized by the province of Ontario for lifeguarding public swimming pools.

Saving Lives While Creating Summer Employment Opportunities for Youth

Our government is working hard to attract more young people to skilled trades and it’s working!

Ontario’s skilled trades offer high-paying careers that are in high demand, as more than a third of Ontario’s apprentice or trade certificate workers are now over 55 years old.

This year skilled trades apprenticeship registrations rose by 24% from 21,971 to 27,319. This includes a 28% increase among females.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)

OYAP is a specialized program in high school that allows students to explore apprenticeship and consider careers in the skilled trades, generally starting in Grade 11 or Grade 12 through the cooperative education program. OYAP now has more than 72 recruiters across 800 schools so students can learn about the skilled trades at a younger age.

Skilled Trades Career Fairs

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development invited students in Grades 7-12 to a traveling career fair to experience hands-on demonstrations of over 140 skilled trades. This year nearly 13,000 students, parents, and teachers visited fairs in Thunder Bay, Sudbury, London, Mississauga, and Ottawa. More locations and dates for next year will be announced later this summer.

Training Ontario’s Workforce

Our government is working hard to tackle Ontario’s historic labour shortage. In order to ensure the workers of tomorrow have the skills they need, our government is investing $224 Million through the Skills Development Fund to build and upgrade training facilities.

It will help unions, Indigenous centres, and industry associations with funding to build new training centres, or upgrade and convert existing facilities into new training centres with state-of-the-art equipment and technology.

This month, the government has announced five initiatives designed to help get people into in-demand careers.

Electricians

The Ontario government is investing $2.7 Million to help electrical apprentices upgrade their skills. In partnership with KE Electrical, we are providing 8,500 hours of hands-on training focused on learning technical skills and abilities, health and safety, professional development, and other critical industry skills.

Millwrights

Our government is helping journey persons and apprentices upgrade their skills to be ready for in-demand jobs like building/maintaining hospitals, schools & infrastructure. In partnership with Millwright Local 1592, we will be training people on boom lifts and elevating work platforms, forklifts, telehandlers, and scissor lifts, while providing technical and employment support needed to get to work.

Paramedics

As part of Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care and its plan to hire more healthcare workers, the Ontario government is helping more students who want to become a paramedic in Ontario by adding more than 300 spaces in paramedic programs at provincial colleges across Ontario this year.

Personal Support Workers

We are investing $16.5 Million to help fast-track training for up to 600 new personal support workers across the province as part of our government’s commitment to ensuring long-term care residents receive an average of four hours of hands-on direct care each day. This program in partnership with Humber College will accelerate the training of existing long-term care staff, such as resident attendants and dietary aides, to become personal support workers faster.

Truck Drivers

Our government is investing $1.3 Million to help women, newcomers, and other underrepresented groups train for well-paying careers in the trucking industry. This funding will provide participants with free training as well as support for transportation, childcare, equipment, and living allowances.

Honouring Ontario’s Heroes

For almost 50 years Ontario has been honoring our brave men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line with the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery and the Ontario Medal for Firefighter Bravery.

The medals are the province’s highest honors and are given to police officers and firefighters who have demonstrated great courage in risking their lives to save the lives of others.

This year we recognized 21 police officers and 11 firefighters for their selfless acts of bravery in 2022.
