Dear Neighbours,

As we gear up for the sun-soaked season of summer, the month of May takes on an electrifying new meaning in Ontario. It’s a time when we come together to celebrate the rich cultural tapestry that makes our province vibrant and unique. From Polish to South Asian to Jewish Heritage Month, this time of the year is packed with joyous festivities to honour the incredible contributions of different communities.

It’s also a crucial time for students as they gear up for their upcoming exams, to all the hardworking scholars out there, Best of Success for the milestone of future endeavours.

We are committed to providing world-class education in Ontario, The Better Schools and Student Outcomes Act to improve student achievement and well-being is another concrete step our government is taking to ensure our students are ready for modern jobs. This act seeks to improve teacher training, parental engagement, school construction, student well-being, and the hiring of additional educators.

The Ontario government has taken a crucial step to address the province’s labor shortage by investing $25 million in the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) to double the number of economic immigrants selected in 2025. Our recent roundtable with local stakeholders provided invaluable insights into improving the immigration process and attracting skilled workers to Ontario.

Finally, I am delighted to invite you to join us at Malton Community Center on May 7th to celebrate Mother’s Day, an occasion to honour the invaluable contributions of mothers to their families and communities. Looking forward to celebrating together the mothers with the apples of their eyes.

Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program Consultations

Thank you, everyone, for joining me and Minister McNaughton, for the Ontario Immigration Nominee Program consultations on April 12th.

The ideas shared were insightful and will play a vital role in shaping current immigration policies and reassessing program eligibility to attract & retain skilled workers in Ontario.

Helping Home Buyers, Protecting Tenants Act

• Increasing the number of adjudicators and staff at the Landlord and Tenant Board to speed up decision timeframes, as well as strengthening a broad range of tenant protections.
  Investing $6.5 million to appoint an additional 40 adjudicators and hire five staff to improve service standards and continue to reduce active applications and decision timeframes at the Landlord and Tenant Board.
• Enhancing tenants’ rights to install air conditioning in their units.
  Strengthening protections against evictions due to renovations, demolitions, and conversions, as well as those for the landlord’s use.
• Reducing barriers for home builders to replace older rental apartments with larger, more modern rental buildings.
  Doubling the maximum fines for offenses under the Residential Tenancies Act (such as bad faith renovations) to $100,000 for individuals and $500,000 for corporations.

In 2022, Ontario saw the second-highest number of housing starts since 1988, with just over 96,000 new homes. This is 30% higher than the annual average for the past 20 years. Ontario also broke ground on nearly 15,000 new purpose-built rentals, the highest number on record.

Ontario Legislative Page Program is Now Accepting Applications for Fall 2023

Do you know someone in Grade 7 or 8 interested in politics?

Ontario’s Legislative Page Program is a great way for students to get first-hand experience learning about government, develop lifelong skills, and make lasting friendships.

The program is designed for outgoing, high-achieving, community-involved students who have demonstrated responsibility and leadership. Legislative Pages meet key parliamentary and political figures and learn first-hand about Ontario’s Parliament and the legislative process.

While at Queen’s Park, they are under the direction of the Page Program Coordinator who is a certified Ontario teacher. Pages also receive an honorarium during their term of duty.

Preparing Students for Jobs of the Future

Our government is committed to laying the groundwork for a truly world-class education system, unified with a singular focus: to improve student outcomes in important life-long skills like reading, writing, and math. This will be supported by the hiring of 1,000 specialized math and literacy educators, as well as new curriculum options, standards, and requirements.

Key changes include:

• Early Readying – hiring over 700 teachers to support universal reading screenings for students in 2nd-year kindergarten to grade 2
• Math – hiring 381 math facilitators to work directly with students & teachers in priority schools, through a Math Action Team which will work directly with school boards to develop action plans.
• Job-Readiness – strengthening cooperative education opportunities, expanding job skill programs, allowing full-time apprenticeships for grade 11 students, and requiring computer technologies classes in grade 9 or 10

Improving Safety In Schools

enhance additional direct services for students, as well as educational assistants, to work with students who may need additional educational support.

We are committed to helping students overcome the personal and academic challenges hindering learning achievement, and help them create meaningful connections to, and a sense of belonging within their schools and communities.

Better Schools and Student Outcomes Act

If passed, the Better Schools and Student Outcomes Act will bring us closer to that goal by targeting 5 key areas.

• Accountability and Transparency
• Governance and Leadership
• Maximizing Capital Assets
• Teacher Training and Oversight
• Consistent Information and Approaches to Student Learning

Training Ontario’s Doctors

Seat allocations will prioritize Ontarians, training the homegrown doctors of tomorrow.

The new positions are part of the government’s provincewide plan – announced in Budget 2023 – to create another 100 undergraduate medical school seats starting in 2023 and another 154 postgraduate medical training positions beginning in 2024 and will help more Ontario students become doctors in their home province.

Optional Ultra Low Overnight Electricity Plan

The Ontario government will soon be offering residents an optional electricity price plan to save people money, while reducing stress on our electricity grid.

The new Ultra Low Overnight Electricity Price Plan, will incentivize “non-peak” electricity use, compensated for with slightly higher peak pricing hours.

You can use Ontario’s Energy Board Bill Calculator to determine the electricity pricing plan that works best for your home or business.

Less Red Tape, Stronger Economy Act

Strengthening Safety & Modernizing Justice Act

The Strengthening Safety and Modernizing Justice Act, 2023 includes legislative amendments that if passed, would support bringing the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019 (CSPA) into force. It proposes amendments that would clear the path for more people to consider a career in policing, strengthen protections for animals, and increase access to the courts by reducing backlogs.

Giving People Second Chances Filling Ontario’s Labour Shortage

Programs will provide a combination of apprenticeship and technical training, on-the-job learning, and improving job readiness and interview skills, as well as encompassing supports like mentorship, job placement, and mental health resources to ensure a smooth transition to the job market.
